Activity 1 : Reconstruction of the cut-out image of a painting

• Responding to routine requirements of tasks

• The image of the painting 
• The pieces of the painting to be cut out (painting Guernica - Picasso - see appendix 2)
• A sheet to glue the pieces of the picture  
• Glue, scissors
• Possibly a beamer to show the image. If not, the image of the painting in A3 format.

The activity consists of:

• Looking at the image for a few minutes before it disappears
• And, using your memory, redo the image.
• This action can be done in teams or alone.

1 - The educator explains the instructions orally: "Reproduce a picture with the cut-out pieces I give you from an image I show you for a few minutes".

2- The educator chooses or proposes that this action be carried out either in teams of 2 or 3 people - or individually.

3 - The educator gives the material to each person or team 

• • the pieces to be cut out with a pair of scissors 
  • the "frame" sheet to reproduce the image 
  • the glue

4- The educator asks the participants to observe the pieces for a few minutes once they have been cut out.

5- The educator explains that s/he will project or show the complete image for 30 seconds. 

The participants will not be able to compose with the pieces of the image at the same time. 

They are required to observe only the projected image.

6 - The educator makes the image disappear from the board. The participants have to try to make the image again.

7 - After a few minutes, the educator asks them to look at the image a second time for 30 seconds.

Same principle, participants observe but do not touch anything of their work.

8 - The participants go back to the task, correct, modify and adjust.

9 - Again, after a few minutes, the educator brings up the image for a final 30 seconds. 

The participants organise themselves as they wish during this last time.

10 - The participants finalise the reproduction of the image and glue each piece.

11 - Once all the images have been completed and the materials put away, the educator asks each team or individual to evaluate their work: do they think they have reproduced the image exactly? Which parts they are sure of and which they are less sure of. 

The educator also asks each person to explain how they have organised themselves, either alone or as a team.

12 - Each image produced by the teams is placed side by side on the board or on a wall so that each team can come and see the other's work.

The educator asks them to comment on the whole and to indicate whether any of them would represent the image exactly. 

13 - Everyone returns to their seats, the image on the board is then represented and everyone can check whether their work has been done accurately and carefully.

14 - The educator asks what the purpose of such an activity is and what it implies: skills and qualities.

15 - The educator, together with the participants, makes a brief comment on the work and its author (possibility to activate the skills developed in Unit 1: Analysing and processing information).

At the end of the work - step 14:

It is interesting for participants to step back from the activity and look at the skills they have developed.

What was the objective of the activity?

How did each person or team go about carrying out the task?

What skills and qualities are activated?

What is the added value of teamwork? or the added value of individual work?

What is the value of self-evaluation?
